Yoga is the science of physical, mental and spiritual development. Although people generally associate the word yoga with physical exercises alone, the real goal of yoga is to bring an individual to complete peace and perfection. To reach this goal yoga employs a complete system of practices in which the commonly known physical postures form a part.
Success in yoga depends on a lifestyle in which an individual achieves harmony with the society and harmony with him or herself. Yoga provides lifestyle guidelines which help people to reach inner and outer harmony.
The physical postures of yoga are important because they help people to avoid illness and to cure existing physical problems. The regular practice of simple yoga postures, combined with proper diet, sleep and other exercise can work wonders.
However, yoga doesn’t end on the physical level. The physical postures themselves not only help the body, they also work on the subtle nerve centers of the body and make it possible for practitioners to balance their emotions and mind.
Further development of the mind is facilitated by practices of controlled breathing, concentration and meditation. Meditation is concentrated positive thinking which leads a person to inner peace and fulfillment. People who practice this part of the yoga system generally find that they can eliminate stress, improve memory and achieve inner peace.
